Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. The city was founded in 1791 and it is named after the United States’ first president, George Washington. The D.C. in Washington D.C. stands for District of Columbia, which means that Washington D.C. is not a part of any state. It is a federal city. Many of the United States’ most famous buildings can be seen in Washington D.C. Some examples are the White House, which is the residence of the President of the U.S., and the United States Capitol, also known as Capitol Hill, which is the meeting place of the U.S. Congress. Washington D.C. also houses many other major U.S. government agencies as well as many war memorials. Besides being the seat of the U.S. government, Washington D.C. is a great sport’s town as it has all three major American professional sports teams.  It also is the location of the Smithsonian Institution, which is a collection of museums and galleries and it is the largest museum complex in the world. The Smithsonian Institution’s museums cover a wide range of topics, from spaceflight to Asian art. The city is a great destination for those that are history lovers.
